Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)

We offer silver diamine fluoride treatment, a painless special fluoride application that can be brushed on directly onto your child’s cavities to stop the cavity progression (arrest the cavity). This is an option to delay treatment until your child is ready for the filling or monitor the area until a baby tooth exfoliates.
It is a temporary solution and the protection layer needs to be maintained with excellent oral hygiene habits on a daily basis otherwise the lesion can still progress.
SDF will stain the cavity area black and the healthy tooth structure will remain white.

Temporary Fillings - SMART Technique

SMART stands for Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique. Material in tooth colour (white) can be applied on top of SDF as an option to increase SDF stability and control the cavity. This is routinely recommended for SDF on chewing surfaces of baby molars. When the alignment of the teeth is suitable, it can also be utilised in upper front teeth to mask the SDF discolouration.
