Baby teeth are vital to the development of your child!

Why do we treat baby teeth?

  • Healthy baby teeth = good food intake = healthy overall growth
  • Healthy baby teeth can prevent dental pain and limit dental anxiety
  • Healthy baby teeth maintain space to welcome adult teeth
  • Cavities on baby teeth can result in tooth structure loss and cause the neighbouring teeth to shift. This means less space for adult teeth, which means more future crowding.
  • Decrease cavity risk in adult teeth 
  • Infection of baby teeth may affect the developing adult teeth. Baby molars are in the mouth until age 10-12 and co-exist with many adult teeth before they exfoliate!

Fillings

At Kiddo Smile Pediatric Dentistry, we use esthetic white filling material (composite) for small cavities. In some situations, we may use Equia Forte HT (also a white material).

Crowns

Our clinic offers crowns of both Stainless Steel (silver) and Zirconia (white). When a cavity infects deep into the tooth, a regular filling will no longer be ideal to fill the hole, and a crown will be placed over the repaired tooth to provide durable and lasting protection.

Extraction

Sometimes a tooth must be extracted due to accident, illness, trauma, disease, or excessive decay. We can gently extract your child’s tooth and provide a comprehensive follow-up plan to prevent the missing tooth from affecting the overall bite.

Space maintainers

  • In order to prevent space loss and ensure there is room for the adult tooth to grow in later, we may use a space maintainer. This will stay in your child’s mouth until their adult tooth begins to erupt below the space. 
  • The space maintainer of choice depends on the location of the missing tooth/teeth and stage of the dentition. The common space maintainer we provide include Nance, Lower Lingual Holding Arch (LLHA), band-and-loop, and distal shoe.
